June 6, 2011 — WWE Monday Night Raw (Season Premiere)

WWE’s season premiere opened the way we left last season: with the new world champion Christian standing in the ring being showered with a chorus of boos. Christian said he’s out here to call out Edge and face him like a man, giving him the title shot he deserves. But then he retracted this saying that the Rated R Superstar had been forced to retire directly after Captain Charisma’s attack on him last April. Christian said he was always better than Edge and he’ll prove it. But tonight, they’re going to announce who his first title defense will be against.

CM Punk pinned Paul London after a short lariat in 0:09:29.
Rating: * * 3/4

Punk began his trek through the cruiserweight division tonight, defeating former singles and tag team champion Paul London! London is coming off a betrayal at the hands of former championship partner Brian Kendrick, and tonight was unable to rebound successfully thanks to the self-proclaimed “Best Wrestler in the World”. Punk will be part of the King of the Ring tournament when he faces Sheamus on PPV in three weeks.

In the ring, Jim Ross formally interviewed world champion Christian. Captain Charisma reiterated that he always had carried Edge, and it’s only fitting that he ended the Rated R Superstar’s career. He plans on having a world championship reign that surpasses every reign Edge ever had. This brought out John Cena! Cena reminded Christian that after his win over Brock Lesner at WrestleMania, he had been named the top contender. That didn’t change when Christian stole the title from Edge. So at King of the Ring in three weeks, it’s going to be John Cena vs. Christian for the heavyweight championship!

Unfortunately, a fully-healed Nigel McGuinness inadvertantly prevented Sheamus from securing the gold. Nigel was watching from the commentator’s table when Mark Henry shoved him down. After the match, Sheamus was visibly frustrated afterward and leveled the champion with a Brogue Kick before storming backstage.

Rating: * * *

In a pre-recorded promo, Ted DiBiase said that while Cody Rhodes may have gone single, he’s still going to dominate the tag team ranks with his new tag team partner. The “Best Wrestler in the World” reiterated that he has dropped down to cruiserweight because that’s where the most talented wrestlers in WWE are right now. Jack Swagger made Ray Gordy submit to the Ankle Lock in 0:05:41.
Rating: * * *

The former Intercontinental champion rolled over Ray Gordy tonight, but after the match, the All-American American took the mic and went on about his disgust as to being left out of the King of the Ring tournament in favor of an unproven newcomer like Sin Cara. The Mexican celebrity has not made too many friends since arriving here in WWE, but he will be in action this Thursday on Superstars to continue to prove himself in the ring.

Backstage, Josh Mathews interviewed former Intercontinental champions Nigel McGuinness and Sheamus about the upcoming King of the Ring tournament. However, the talks quickly broke down into Sheamus blaming Nigel for costing him his match against Mark Henry last week. Nigel agreed his temper got the best of him, but the World’s Strongest Man cost him a title match at WrestleMania and he won’t rest until he’s paid back in full. Sheamus understood, but told him from now on to keep his nose out of the Celtic Warrior’s business.

Christian pinned Paul London with the Killswitch in 0:07:38.
Rating: * * * 1/4

The world champion had a tough challenge in our main event tonight, battling former tag team champ Paul London. Christian came out victorious, but obviously wanted to make a point as he put Paul London in a Sharpshooter and refused to remove the hold. We’d later find out that Paul London’s right knee had been injured and doctors think he’ll likely be out through the end of the 2011. After the match, however, the Marauders’ Mason Ryan entered the fray and laid out Cena, initiating a brawl with The WGTT that found its way to the locker room. Christian slithered back into the ring with his championship belt and stalked Cena as he got back to his feet. The champion nailed Cena in the head with the belt and celebrated his devious deed with one foot on his unconscious challengers chest as the show came to a close.

Rating: * * 1/4
(The World's Greatest Tag Team retained the World Tag Team Titles.)

If a tag team in WWE is going to dethrone the WGTT, they’re going to have to put forth a near-perfect effort in the ring. Tonight, Benjamin and Haas were able to put away the Marauders in reasonably impressive fashion to retain the titles. William Regal tried to throw the champions a curveball with the late addition of Santino, but the WGTT weren’t thrown and put the new duo away to retain. What’s next for the champs?

Sin Cara eventually hit Miz with a sharp, sudden enzuigiri to the back of the head, knocking Miz out just long enough to cover him for the pin! Miz was furious at the sudden turn of events and attacked Sin Cara before hitting him with the Skull Crushing Finale and leaving him beaten down once again in the center of the ring. Either CM Punk or Nigel McGuinness will have a very strong-willed but weakened opponent in the King of the Ring finals.

But ultimately, it will be Punk, "The Best Wrestler in the World", who goes on to the finals for the opportunity to become King.

Rating: * * * * 1/2
(Christian retained the World Heavyweight Title.)

[The Big Show interfered against John Cena.]

John Cena dominated the world champion for much of this match. In the opinion of most every fan in the WWE Universe, John Cena should be a seven-time world champion right now and certainly would be if it weren’t for the big right hand of a seven-foot tall monster. The Big Show appeared at the end of the match and knocked out Cena, allowing Christian to cover his opponent. While everyone assumed the match to be over, Cena still kicked out! A stunned champion wasted no time in lifting Cena up and hitting the Killswitch to ultimately put the challenger away. Christian retains his world championship by the narrowest of margins, but the bigger question looms: why has Big Show singled out John Cena?

King of the Ring - Finals:
CM Punk pinned Sin Cara with the GTS in 0:08:15.
Rating: * * * 1/4

All hail King Punk! The Second City Saint seemed to be salivating on his way to the ring to face Sin Cara in the finals after the Mexican sensational was laid out twice after his matches earlier in the night, but Sin Cara refused to give in and almost had the crown won on a handful of occassions! But Punk finally hit the GTS and put away his opponent for good to claim the throne. However, for all the talk about Sin Cara not deserving a spot in the tournament when it started, he proved his mettle tonight in three grueling matches.
After the bout, Punk headed to the stage for his coronation ceremony. But he interrupted his own crowning, saying he doesn’t care about the crown, the scepter, or the cape, as he trashed each item as he mentioned it. All the Second City Saint cares about is being the “Best in the World”. Punk dropped a bombshell on the WWE Universe as he announced that his contract would expire at 11:59pm on August 1, and he intended to leave the WWE that day as the world champion! He put Rey Mysterio on notice and said that until then, “All hail the Best in the World”.

The Faceless One made a huge statement last night, making it to the King of the Ring finals despite two tough matches against (and post-match attacks by) IC champion Mark Henry and The Miz before falling to CM Punk. Tonight, he showed off his incredible aerial skills en route to defeating Joseph Hennig.

In the ring, Jim Ross interviewed the world heavyweight champion, Christian. Captain Charisma said he had no clue that The Big Show was going to interject himself in his match with John Cena, but it didn’t matter anyway. The champion bragged that he had Cena right where he wanted him anyway, and he would’ve beaten him. Just like he’ll beat anyone else who challenges for the world championship. Christian vowed to be the longest reigning world champion in WWE history.

The Hart Dynasty (Tyson Kidd and DH Smith) defeated David Otunga and El Fragilico when
T. Kidd pinned Fragilico after the Hart Attack in 0:05:14.
Rating: * 1/2

The surprising return of the Hart Dynasty surely must be a warning signal to the rest of the tag team division, as these former tag team champions are absolutely looking to make a run for the gold once again. It was announced that the championship committee has suspended Henry for two weeks without pay and he will defend his IC title against Nigel McGuinness upon his return. The winner of that match will be the new top contender to Christian’s heavyweight championship and will face him for the title at SummerSlam.

In the ring, Jim Ross interviewed Big Show. Show told the audience that he attacked John Cena last night because it was the right thing to do. For too long, Cena’s been the supposed “face of the WWE” and that doesn’t sit right with a lot of people. Show is one of the biggest and baddest men in the planet, let alone in the WWE. He said that even though Cena’s at home licking his wounds, he knows he’ll be back soon. And when he comes back, Show will be waiting.

The Miz grabs some important momentum to start the TV Championship Tournament by essentially stealing the Rumble win. But Mysterio retains and will await his next challenger, who very well may be King of the Ring CM Punk. Punk showed up atop the entrance ramp after the match and mockingly applauded the world champion. Mysterio held the belt in the air as Punk looked on and the show came to a close.
